Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) is an abnormally fast heartbeat. SVT is a common name for many types of heart rhythm problems that begin above the ventricles in the heart’s upper chambers or atria. Many people with SVT can regulate their rapid heartbeats with treatments.

Causes

SVT can result from stress, exercise or lack of sleep. Causes can also include:

  • Thyroid disease
  • Heart disease
  • Heart failure
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Smoking
  • Thyroid disease
  • Excessive alcohol
  • Excessive caffeine
  • Cocaine and methamphetamines use
  • Medications for asthma medications, colds and allergies
  • Surgery
  • Pregnancy

Symptoms

SVT symptoms can last a few hours to a couple of days, and some people may show no symptoms.

Frequent episodes of SVT can become a problem when combined with heart disease or other medical conditions.

Symptoms include:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • A fluttering in your chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • A pounding sensation in the neck
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Fainting
